What were you doing when scouted? I was at the Mirth drinking tea, detox-ing from the weekend.
How would you describe your style? I have a global style. I incorporate fashions from many different cultures, picking up ideas when I travel. I work certain aspects into my own wardrobe.
What are your current favorite fashion trends? Monochrome colors and solids. I appreciate the simplicity they provide. Their aesthetic is refreshing after constant exposure to so many graphics and patterns that always seem to have too much going on.
What are your least favorite fashion trends? Anything that is overdone. For example, in terms of make-up, over-the-top, heavy application looks unnatural and hides all of your features. Pick one or two of your favorite features, and accentuate those you want to stand out.
What would you like to see more of in Lawrence? I’d like to see more modesty. It is not a competition, and Lawrence is very accepting, very non-judgmental. Modesty is attractive — so don’t give everything away with a first glance.
What would you like to see less of in Lawrence? I only want to see less strict social environments that foster a non-judgmental atmosphere. People shouldn’t feel restricted or nervous to express themselves. By maintaining an accepting city, individuals can practice creativity, distinguish themselves and discover their own sense of style.
Who are your fashion influences? I identify with the style mantra of the late ’70s and early ’80s. The attitude of young people shifted, becoming more open, yet more focused on a personal style for the individual that stimulated diversity among the populace. This also generated a lot of productivity. People like Joanna Newsom and Neko Case were born out of smaller towns that provided just enough comfort for the two to develop their own personas.
People say I look like: People tell me “Regina Spektor” or “Helena Bonham Carter,” the actress from “Fight Club” and “Harry Potter” — she is Tim Burton’s wife. Although I can identify with Regina Spektor’s Russian birth-place, I think I look more like Helena Bonham Carter.
Tell us a secret: Less is more, but you must take time to make time. If you slow down and allow your personal style to develop at your own pace you will always remain true to yourself.
